Spring Gardening Guide: 5 Steps to Successfully Transplant Plants Into Your Garden

Tri-Community NewsPlus

It’s officially spring which means it’s time for many gardeners to begin transplanting plants into nutrient-rich soil. Once you have fortified your soil and solarized the area, you can follow these steps to ensure successful transplantation to make sure your plants thrive.

Moistening the Soil

Deep water the area daily for about a week. This helps guarantee the soil stays evenly moist and free of dry air pockets, which can help prevent transplant shock for your plants.

Watering Before Transplant

Water the area then dig the hole for your plant. Once the hole is dug, water the hole itself, and also water the plant in its pot before transplanting.

Digging the Right Hole Size

The hole should be twice the width of the container the plant came from and as deep as the soil level in the container.

Transplanting the Plant

Carefully take the plant out of its pot and gently loosen the roots (a process known as “tickling” the roots). Then place the plant in the hole and cover it with soil.

Aftercare

Water the area and keep it moist for the first week, until the plant becomes more established.

With proper preparation, careful planting, and attentive watering, spring transplants can settle in quickly and reward gardeners with healthy growth throughout the season.
