A new little free library has been proudly constructed at the Heritage School in Phelan. On Wednesday, March 27th, the community library was dedicated in front of the school. The brightly painted blue and yellow box has already been affectionately overfilled with free children’s books.
This new addition to the school was funded by the Tri-Community Kiwanis Club, whose mission is to help kids grow and is dedicated to supporting the local community, which services Phelan, Pinon Hills, and Wrightwood. The new little library helps to accomplish those goals since it fosters a sense of community while also helping to promote a love of literacy by providing a community-run book exchange.
Although you can find many little libraries in the Tri-Community, this one holds a special significance to the community since it was dedicated to a prominent local resident.
“The Tri-Community Kiwanis started in 1993, and the goal of the Kiwanis Club is to help the kids of our community. So, as an appreciation to our founding member and on behalf of the Tri-Community Kiwanis Club, this little library is dedicated to Karen Frazier,” said current Tri-Community Kiwanis President Lety Corrales.
Karen Frazier attended the dedication and was shown much appreciation by fellow members of the Kiwanis Club and honored by local students who were included in the event since the club works closely with the Heritage Builders Club and the Serrano Key Club by helping to prepare young children to become future leaders.
The Tri-Community Kiwanis Club also raises funds for student scholarships and hosts several community fundraising events throughout the year, including Quartermania and the Horse Derby. This year, on Saturday, May 11th, the club is partnering with the Phelan Chamber of Commerce to offer a Tri-Community 5k Fiesta where proceeds will help benefit scholarship funds. The event will take place at the Serrano High School track and football field. Registration is $30 per race entry and is open to youth, teens, and adults. Visit www.tc5kfiesta.com for more information and to register for this fun community event.
The Tri-Community Kiwanis is celebrating 30 years of serving the Tri-Community. Some of their accomplishments over the years have included founding and sponsoring the Heritage Builders Club and Serrano Key Club, Santa visits to Head Start students, roadside trash cleanups, and co-chaired the Phelan Fireworks and Rodeo.
The one event they are most proud of is the Veterans’ Dinner, co-hosted by the Snowline School District. The annual event started in the cafeteria at The Heritage School almost 30 years ago with just a handful of veterans and is now held at the Serrano High School Gym, where nearly a thousand meals are served. Students from the Builders and Key Clubs and several other youth groups help serve hungry veterans. They are encouraged to talk with and ask questions of the veterans to learn of the sacrifices that soldiers make in the name of freedom and to honor their brave service to the Country.
The Tri-Community Kiwanis is always looking for new members. It meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Pizza Factory in Phelan.
