Heinz Steinmann passed away on Oct. 7, 2024, at his home in Wrightwood at the age of 92. He and Lora, his wife of 68 years, had 11 children, 46 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren. Heinz was a beloved member of the Wrightwood community and a respected figure in the ski industry, where he made a lasting impact.
He was born in Kriens, Switzerland, on Oct. 22, 1931. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 16 years old and settled in Whittier, California. Heinz graduated from Whittier High School and later from UCLA with degrees in business and hospital administration. In 1956, he married Lora Lombardi, and the couple moved to Wrightwood, where Heinz worked at the family ski business, Holiday Hill, while also serving in the Army Reserve as a first lieutenant.
In 1961, he purchased Holiday Hill from his father and brothers and continued building the ski area into a cherished part of the local community. He started a children’s ski program at Wrightwood Elementary School and served three terms on the school board. He remained dedicated to the sport and his community until he sold the ski area after 21 years. Heinz then focused on new business ventures, including building post offices and raising thoroughbred racehorses. One of his horses, Creative Cause, competed in the Kentucky Derby in 2012.
Heinz was a devout member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and found joy in his later years watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit and play in his backyard. He also loved playing golf with friends at Crystalaire Country Club. Heinz’s life was shaped by his passion for skiing and his love for family, a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
Heinz was preceded in death by his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Lora, and their children Eric, Mary, John, Teresa, Katherine, Andrea, Heinz, Susanna, Jeffrey, and Thomas, who will greatly miss him.

A rosary will be held in Wrightwood at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Phelan at Blessed Saint Junipero Serra Church on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception at Wrightwood Place. Burial will take place at Mt. View Cemetery at 4 p.m.
