San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies are seeking the community’s help in identifying the individual or individuals responsible for the recent installation of a skimming device on the fuel pumps at the Phelan 7-Eleven.
The incident came to light on Monday, January 17th, when a customer discovered unauthorized charges on his bank statement after using his debit card at the gas station. Upon reporting the matter to law enforcement, deputies promptly arrived at the scene, where the victim had last made a transaction, and uncovered a skimming device discreetly attached to one of the payment keypads.
To protect yourself from such fraudulent activities, it is crucial to carefully examine the card reader at fuel pumps for any suspicious signs of tampering, such as loose pieces or unusual attachments. Whenever feasible, opt for a pump that is situated near the store entrance, as this allows for better visibility to employees who can help monitor for any unusual behavior. Additionally, always ensure that you safeguard your Personal Identification Number (PIN) by covering it with your hand while entering it on the keypad.
The investigation is currently ongoing, and anyone with pertinent information is strongly encouraged to reach out to Deputy A. Mahli at the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station by calling 760-552-6800. Those who wish to provide information may remain anonymous and can also contact We-Tip at 800-78CRIME or visit www.wetip.com for further assistance.
