Summertime is near! The Summer Solstice which is the first day of Summer, begins on June 20, 2024 when the Sun reaches its most northern point in the sky at noon. It is the day with the most hours of sunlight. After this date the days start getting shorter.
The Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. If you check your shadow at noon you’ll find your shortest shadow of the year. Check it again in month or so and notice the difference. The four seasons are determined by changing sunlight which is determined by how our planet orbits the Sun and the tilt of its axis.
During June this year the Strawberry Moon is a Solstice Full Moon. The Strawberry Full Moon will coincide with the Summer Solstice on June 20-21st. These two events occurring at the same time may only happen every few decades. A little Strawberry Moon folklore: A growing Moon and a flowing tide are lucky times to marry. Days following both the New and Full Moons are most likely to be rainy or stormy. Crabbing, shrimping, and clamming are best when the Moon is full.
