The Women’s Council of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Wrightwood invites all to attend a Feast Day Meal in honor of St. Joseph. Traditionally on this day, the community is welcome to attend. The Festive Dinner is called ”St. Joseph’s Table.” Donations are welcome at the door. The dinner at the Wrightwood Community Building will be served from 5:00-7:00 pm on St. Joseph’s Day, Sunday, March 19, 2023. You’ll enjoy great hospitality and Italian food.
An age-old Italian tradition, St. Joseph is the patron of workers and the protector of the family. According to legend, there was a famine in Sicily many centuries ago. The villagers prayed to St. Joseph, the foster father of the infant Savior, to end the dreadful famine, and their prayers were answered. Wealthy families prepared huge buffets, and a special feast of thanksgiving was held. The less fortunate, especially the homeless and sick, were invited.
The celebration began with a religious tableau (scene). Selected villagers portray the “Holy Family” and are seated at the head of the table accompanied by Apostles and children attired as angels. The village priest blessed the food, and the Holy Family was served first by the host and hostess. The guests were welcome to come and go as they wished and eat what they chose. The table design is dignified and solemn yet festive, grand, and inspiring.
To this day, many Catholic Churches and families celebrate this St. Joseph tradition. The Women’s Council of Our Lady of the Snows has chosen to honor St. Joseph’s Day by inviting the community to this tradition. Donations of a dish to share or a donation at the door are welcome.
