Vard Recycling opened a new location in Wrightwood, in the Wrightwood Fine Foods parking lot on Hwy 2. Since its first location opened in October 2022 behind the Anytime Fitness building in Phelan, Vard has been quickly expanding in the Tri-Community.
Their newest Wrightwood location officially opened on Monday, March 25th, 2024, and had a prominent start since residents were quick to notice the big green containers being set up days before the recycling facility even opened.
Wrightwood residents can now take their aluminum, glass and plastic recycling to a more convenient location where several items can be recycled for cash. Pricing is always subject to change, but at the time of printing this article, prices showed that aluminum was at $1.70 per pound, glass was at $0.11 per pound, and bimetal was at $.40 per pound. Several types of plastics are accepted, including #1 PETE at $1.32 per pound, #2 HDPE at $.59 per pound, #3 PVC at $.48 per pound, #4 LDPE at $2.04 per pound, #5 PP at $.55 per pound, #6 PS at $5.01 per pound, and #7 OTHER plastics at $.31 per pound.
According to CalRecycle’s website, a total of 19.6 billion bottles and cans were returned for recycling in 2022 compared to the 27.8 billion beverages that were sold in the state of California. Therefore, more than half of the beverage containers that were bought in 2022 ended up being recycled with a rate of 70% Unfortunately, this is just short of California’s goal, which is to have an 80% recycling rate.
Since then, there have also been some updates made to the Beverage Container Recycling Program in California. Governor Gavin Newsom approved Senate Bill 1013 in September of 2022, which allowed wine and distilled spirits with alcohol of 7% or greater by volume to be included in the recycling program, which came into effect beginning January 1, 2024. Prior to January 1, 2024, CRV-eligible alcoholic drinks only included beer and wine coolers with alcohol contents of 7% alcohol by volume (ABV). However, several containers are still not accepted in California’s Beverage Recycling Program, which includes milk, medical food, infant formula, food and non-beverage containers, juice boxes, juice pouches, and juice cartons. For a more detailed list of acceptable items and changes to the program, please visit www.calrecycle.ca.gov/bevcontainer/basics/
