Securing a position at a hiring event take more than just a resume. it require a strategy to break through the noise and ensure you’re remembered long after the hiring event ends. Here are a few tips and tricks you can use to increase your chances of scoring a job.
When attending a hiring event, you are going to want to make a good first impression, so the first thing you want to focus on in preparation for this event is your appearance. Dress professionally. According to Positive Business DC, they say “people make eleven decisions about us in the first seven seconds of contact,” and those decisions can be positive or negative depending on your appearance.
You will also want to have your resume ready to give to an employer when asked, so print 15 to 20 copies of your resume and bring them in a professional folder. That way, you are organized and prepared. Also, you may want to avoid chewing gum. While it is well known that chewing gum can increase your concentration all the while reducing your anxiety, it is recommended to have a mint instead. Resume and Career Services say, “…don’t chew gum. It looks unprofessional and disrespectful…having gum in your mouth could impede your ability to enunciate…”.
Another helpful tip is to have an introduction speech ready. According to careerforce.mn.gov you will want to “Develop a 20-30 second introduction of yourself that includes your name, your area of expertise, your accomplishments and what kind of position you’re seeking.” It’s a good idea to have a notepad and pen on hand to take notes of key details from your conversations, like the recruiter’s name, phone number (if given), company website, or email address to use in a follow-up email.
With preparation and a professional approach, the High Desert’s next hiring event could be the start of your next great career chapter. So mark your calendars for July 23rd, grab your resumes, pens, and notepads, and take the first step toward your future.
