A little rain didn’t stop the final concert for the 2023 Music in the Pines from taking center stage. Wrightwood was met with scattered rain showers on Thursday, August 10th, and left many residents wondering if the concert was still on schedule for that night. Thankfully, the clouds parted, and the sun was peaking out just in time for the 6:00 pm start time.
Although the Wrightwood Community Building parking lot was a little damp from the rain, it was still packed with a full audience in attendance while the usual culinary suspects of Mexico Lindo, Mile High Pizza, Rose Noir Chocolates, and The Village Grind provided food and drinks.
The Darryls, four-piece band, opened the show and performed cover songs by Tom Petty and even sang Cake’s rendition of “I Will Survive,” which tied in perfectly with the soulful sounds of the main act scheduled for that evening. But before the second band took to the stage, Claudia Campbell thanked all the sponsors and businesses that had made this year’s Music in the Pines a success. She mentioned that 2023 marked 18 years for the Music in the Pines free concert series, and they can’t wait to celebrate 19 years coming up in 2024.Gina Graham and the Taylor Made Band closed out the night with some smooth sounds and performed songs by Stevie Wonder and Tina Turner. Gina Graham is a seasoned Music in the Pines veteran and performed last year. She had mentioned that it’s always been her favorite event and loves being in Wrightwood, saying, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to perform for you […] hopefully we’ll be back here as soon as possible.” As the sun set on the final concert for 2023, the crowd continued to dance and sing along into the night.
Although the Music in the Pines series is over for the year, there is still plenty of live music happening during the month of September. Live bands will be performing at the Mt. High North Lodge on Saturday evenings from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm. Don’t miss local Wrightwood Blues Society legend Greg Jones perform there on September 9th.
