Summer Rain Revives High Desert Plants and Gardens

Harvest season for apples is coming to an end, so make sure you get a bushel or two from the Phelan Farmers Market.

When I went outside today after a gorgeous Summer thunderstorm yesterday, it reminded me of something. The plants were brighter, greener, and much happier, not only because of the rain and high humidity, but also because it was pure, beautiful rainwater. We definitely don’t get rain very often in our High Desert home, but there are a number of industry filters that you can attach to your hose connection or to your irrigation connections. These filters will remove impurities and make your plants much happier, mimicking the effects of rainwater. September in the High Desert is still warm, but the shorter day length is apparently evident. When starting Winter crops, keep in mind that you need to extend the crop length due to the shorter days. The 60 days stated on the seed packets for maturity will be more like 90 days.

At Moonstruck Farms, we are focusing more on the farm than ever. I no longer attend the Wrightwood Farmers Market, allowing me to concentrate on caring for the farm and preserving all the wealth of goodness it creates. You can still find me at the Phelan Farmers Market every Monday, and many of our gift items are available on Etsy. Additionally, you can order directly from our Square website at https://moonstruck-farms.square.site. The apples continue to come off the trees in order of their maturity, providing us with a wide variety of gorgeous apples to create our butters and preserves with.

Additionally, we are drying a large number of these for our mulled cider kits and granola recipes. The late peaches will be harvested in the coming weeks, completing the peach season. Soon after, the remaining apples are expected to be harvested around October, concluding the harvest season for Moonstruck Farms.

The Phelan Certified Farmers Market is held on Mondays from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Phelan Community Center, both indoors and outdoors, year-round. The Wrightwood Certified Farmers Market is held on Fridays, from 4 pm to 7 pm, in the Wrightwood Community Center parking lot. Both are full of the glory of the end of summer season, with everything from lettuce to Winter squash now available.

Remember, you are what makes these markets great!! Without you, we would not have these wonderful farmers’ markets serving our communities! Thank you for your tremendous support throughout the year!
