As we approach the shortest days of the year, and your gardens are tucked away for the Winter, the days are at their shortest right now, but as soon as the solstice slides by, each day will get a little longer, giving all the plants and trees the “signal” that the days are lengthening, and it is time to come back to life. In order to prepare for this time, many plants need a nice pruning to prepare them for this resurgence of growth. Roses do particularly well with a nice deep pruning, allowing long stems to come forth in the Spring. Don’t forget to prune those fruit trees of any dead or broken branches, and in particular, stone fruit such as peaches, plums, and nectarines benefit from being cut back at least 1/3 and remember to open up in the center of the canopy to allow light in.
At Moonstruck Farms, all the Spring bulbs, including thousands of tulip bulbs, are tucked safely into the cool room. We are starting hydroponic trays each week to provide tulips much earlier than the field tulips will be ready, allowing us to provide beautiful farm-fresh flowers at the market during the shortest days of the year. Some of these Spring bulbs are still available at https://fablesbulbsandseeds.com. Use promo code NEWSPLUS50 to receive 50% off your order.
