The Arts Center in Wrightwood is committed to fostering creativity in the community by offering art classes and workshops and featuring a monthly rotating gallery in their new location on Park Drive in Wrightwood. As a local paper, we are passionate about highlighting people in our community and proud to work with this amazing organization to feature a monthly artist and amplify their story, as well as their artistic talents.
For April, Wrightwood resident, Paul Samenfeld will display his artistic creations at the Community Arts Center & Gallery. For the last 20 years, Paul has been making art out of recycled and found materials. A unique process that Paul views as a benefit saying “My overhead is low because folks throw everything away. To me, it’s not a hobby but more of a lifestyle.” We asked Paul more about his artwork, his life, and his inspirations.
When did you know that you wanted to become an artist?
I have always created things, mostly out of wood. My Mum was an artist and so is her sister, who is 97 years old and still making art. So, I guess this is my blood.
Could you tell us about your artwork? What materials do you use, and what style is your work?
It’s called assemblage, found art, upcycling, repurposing, and recycling. The sculptures are made from everyday materials that people discard.
Where do you find inspiration for your artwork?
Inspiration? This is how I see it; it’s the best feeling. It’s a blessing when people buy your work and hang it in their homes. I’ll be hanging around long after I leave this earth.
Who are your artistic heroes? (i.e., other creatives you look up to)
Actually, I have a few artists that inspire me. Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss. Maybe because I grew up on Dr Seuss and all his colorful characters.
When you’re not creating art, what do you enjoy doing?
Art is a lifestyle. I listen to music all the time, especially when I’m creating, reading, and exercising.
Is there any advice you would give aspiring artists hoping to be featured in a gallery someday?
You have to have passion and never give up.
The community is invited to Paul’s creative and thought-provoking art exhibit, which will open on Saturday, April 6th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. His artwork will continue to be on display and available for purchase throughout April at the Community Arts Center & Gallery, which is located at 6045 Park Dr. in Wrightwood and open on Thursdays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Fridays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
