The Community Arts Center & Gallery in Wrightwood is expanding its offerings to include even more programs this Spring & Summer!
TEEN & YOUTH CLASSES
The organization announced a new Teen Visual Art Class that will run after school from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:45 pm to 5:45 pm. This class is geared toward middle- through high-school students. The cost is $12 per student, and lessons will include perspective, shading techniques, concept design, and mixed media works.
The arts center will continue to offer their Visual Arts Class for early childhood (ages 2-5) on Wednesdays from 2:00 pm-2:30 pm and an Afternoon Art Class for elementary-age students on Thursdays from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm.
“The goal of these classes is to get kids thinking creatively and to explore a variety of art materials. We introduce contemporary artists as problem-solvers with the goal of creating 21st-century learners, able to adapt and think outside the box,” says the director, Jamie Crooke Powell.
All of the youth classes must be registered for in advance. Please visit their website to sign up or learn more about each class: www.drawingtogether.city/wrightwood-programs/
FAMILY EVENTS
Another artistic opportunity being offered is Make and Take Saturdays. This free arts and crafts activity is for all ages every Saturday from 12:30 -1:30 pm at the Community Art Center & Gallery in Wrightwood. The event will be drop-in, with no registration required. Join the first one on Saturday, March 2nd, at noon, which is in partnership with local reptile rescue Slither’s and Crawls. The activity will be bug doodles, where participants of all ages can draw real-life bugs!
SUMMER ART & NATURE CAMP
Also, on March 15th, registration will open for The Summer Art and Nature Camp program for youth ages 5 to 12 years old, taking place at Wrightwood Elementary School over the summer. This week-long summer camp will rotate through 3 classes: art, drama, and botany. The Summer Art and Nature Camp is now in its second year and is largely funded by the California Arts Council, a state granting agency for high-quality arts programs. The cost is only $50 per week, and scholarships are available to those who need them. The anticipated dates are June 17-21 (no programming on Wednesday, June 20th) and June 24-27 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Register online at www.drawingtogether.city/wrightwood-programs/
ADULT WORKSHOPS
Adult workshops and classes are also offered throughout the month. Please pick up a list of current offerings at the Art Center or visit Eventbrite and search “Drawing Together.” The next adult Paint and Sip event will take place on March 2nd from 5:00-7:00 pm. Registration is required; please sign up online through Eventbrite; the cost is $35.
There will also be a free writers group taking place on Saturday, March 16th from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Come meet local writers and discuss the literary art of writing. Bring a notebook for a quick writing exercise to get the creativity flowing. After, there will be an open reading portion for writers to share any projects that they’re working on. Bring poems, scripts, dream journals, a beginning of a novel, or any other piece of writing to read to the group. Please keep it to 500 words or less so everyone can have the chance to participate! This is a free event, no registration is required.
OPEN HOUSE EVENT
Also, please save the date for the organization’s Open House Event on May 4th, 2024. Over the last two years, the Wrightwood Arts Center has run a thriving art and wine festival for the community. This coming year, the organization will scale down the event to highlight the new arts center by offering a spring Open House. The event will feature several local artists’ artwork for sale, an exhibition, and wine tasting at the new Wrightwood Arts Center & Gallery. If you would like to help at the Open House event, any interested sponsors, volunteers, and artists can email info@wrightwoodartscenter.com.
All of this work is made possible by grants and individual donors. If you would like to support their programs or help start a new one, you can email Jamie, the Executive Director, at info@DrawingTogether.city.
