Wrightwood local Suzi McKinney is set to captivate audiences with her stunning artwork at the Community Arts Center & Gallery this April. The free art exhibit opening will take place on April 5th from 5pm to 7pm, showcasing her artistic journey across various mediums.
Since becoming a full-time resident of Wrightwood in 2019, Suzi has embraced the breathtaking landscapes that surround her. She and her husband have been part-time residents since 2003, vacationing in his family cabin nestled among towering pines and majestic mountains. Their shared love for the area’s natural beauty prompted them to leave their coastal life in Playa Del Rey for the fresh mountain air of Wrightwood.
Suzi has retired from a successful career in dental hygiene, having studied at the University of Southern California Dental School. With an impressive 35 years in the field, she developed her skills as a dental hygienist while also nurturing her artistic talents. The dexterity she gained from constantly working with her hands at her job has laid a strong foundation for her diverse artistic pursuits, which include intricate jewelry making, the fluidity of watercolor painting, the comforting art of crocheting, and dynamic acrylic painting.

As a self-taught artist, Suzi finds joy in experimenting with new mediums. “I’m always finding something new; I get bored easily,” she explained. “If I don’t find creativity in one medium, I find something else.”
Just like her art, Suzi’s life includes a tapestry of interests, including cooking, playing pickleball, diving into the pages of a good book, and doing yoga. In fact, you may have encountered Suzi at Love Roots Yoga Shala in Wrightwood, where she is a part owner and instructor. The yoga studio recently celebrated its 5-year anniversary last June. With nearly two decades of experience teaching yoga, she believes the practice enriches her art by fostering a sense of mindfulness and balance that enhances her creative work. Suzi also said how she’s inspired by some of her artistic heroes which include esteemed artists Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh and Salvidor Dali.
Suzi is excited to have her art featured at the Community Arts Center & Gallery, as she has deep ties with the Wrightwood Arts Center (WAC) organization and mentioned how she previously taught a dotted art workshop at WAC’s first location above the Village Grind coffee shop on Park Drive.
With her boundless enthusiasm and vibrant creativity, Suzi McKinney is not only a vital part of Wrightwood’s artistic community but also an inspiring figure, encouraging others to discover and nurture their own creative expressions. She offers this advice to aspiring artists in the community: “Be yourself, be playful, and have fun!”
Be sure to visit Suzi’s art exhibit opening on April 5th from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Community Arts Center & Gallery, located at 6045 Park Drive in Wrightwood. The event is free and open to the public. Suzi’s artwork will remain on display throughout April, so stop by the gallery during regular business hours, which are Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 PM.
