A boil water notice has been issued for Wrightwood customers served by Golden State Water Company. The notice comes after a storm-damaged fire hydrant caused a system outage during heavy debris flows and flooding.
Golden State Water and the State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water advise customers to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking. Boil tap water for at least one minute before use. For more details please see the Boil Water Order below.
The company reported that some customers may be experiencing reduced water pressure. Bad weather, severe flooding, debris flow, and road closures have made it difficult for crews to access the damaged fire hydrant. As a result, Golden State Water has not been able to provide an estimate for when repairs will be completed or when the boil water notice may be lifted.
Golden State Water serves approximately 4,100 customers in Wrightwood. The company has provided water to the community since 1976. Water for the Wrightwood system is supplied by groundwater pumped from canyon underflows, Swarthout Valley, and Sheep Creek in the Wrightwood area near Highway 2.
The boil water notice applies to all of Wrightwood. Residents should not drink tap water, brush teeth, or prepare food with tap water unless it has been boiled or replaced with bottled water. Showers and baths are considered safe, but residents should use caution if water appears cloudy or discolored. Ice makers should be emptied and not used until the notice is lifted. It is recommended to use boiled or bottled water for pets as an added precaution.
NewsPlus contacted Golden State Water seeking additional details about the damaged hydrant and repair efforts, but the company had not responded as of press time.
The Wrightwood water system is separate from the Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District and Sheep Creek Water. While all three draw water from related regional sources, each system operates independently. Each has its own wells, storage, and distribution infrastructure. The Wrightwood boil water notice does not apply to customers served by PPHCSD or Sheep Creek Water.
The notice remains in effect as another storm system moves through the region. A flood watch is in effect, with flooding possible by early Friday morning. National Weather Service forecasts for Wrightwood call for rain and snow showers through Friday. Wind gusts up to 40 mph, and additional precipitation are expected, which could further complicate access to damaged infrastructure.
