The Victor Valley High School Jackrabbits kept their winning streak going on March 26 at Serrano High School in a 10-inning thriller. VVHS is now 2-0, and SHS moves to 1-1.
The Diamondbacks got off to an early lead in the bottom of the first when #1 Angelo Iorio went up to bat with runners on first and second. Pitching for VVHS was #12, Michael Jimenez. Iorio hit a ground ball towards second base that passed through the defender’s glove. The error allowed Serrano’s #34, Daniel O’Neill, to come in for the score making the game 0-1.
The Jackrabbits #13, Steven Hernandez, came to bat at the top of the sixth with runners on first and third. Pitching for SHS was #4, Aiden Taylor. Hernandez connected with a base hit that brought in #5, Alexander Rodriguez, for the tying score of 1-1.
At the top of the tenth, #13 Steven Hernandez came to bat for the Jackrabbits with a runner on third. Pitching for SHS was #31, Preston Overton. Hernandez got a base hit that allowed #5, Rodriguez, to come in for his second score of the game and giving the VVHS their first lead at 2-1.
Pitching for the Jackrabbits in the bottom of the tenth was #8, Marco Rivas. First batter up was #31 Overton, who connected with a base hit. Three batters later, O’Neill was at bat with runners on first and second and two outs in the game. He hit a fly ball that was caught for the final out, sealing VVHS’s victory.
After the game, the Diamondbacks Head Coach, John Grijalva, said that he was pleased with the game, although it was “not the ending I expected.” “We had plenty of opportunities to score, and we just couldn’t pull the trigger at the right time.”
Serrano’s next game is at Barstow High School on March 31, at 3:15 pm.
