D-Backs Football: Payton Cornell, Serrano's quarterback follows his blocks and breaks through defenders to score one of his two rushing touchdowns.

The Diamondback Football season opened on Friday, August 20, and the team showcased a strong offensive running game led by the Junior running back, Marcus Jones. Serrano faced off against Lancaster High School in a non-league game, and behind Jones’ strong performance of six carries for 84 yards and three touchdowns, the Diamondbacks defeated Lancaster 49-14.

Serrano got off to a slow start, not taking the lead until late in the first quarter when they went up 7-0. From there on, it all Serrano all the way. With 11:05 left in the second quarter, Jones ran in the Diamondback’s second touchdown, making the game 13-0 after a failed point after a touchdown attempt.

With under seven minutes left in the second quarter, Lancaster had a short field, with a third and one from the six-yard line. They decided to pass to the outside only for the ball to be intercepted by Serrano’s number 11, senior Tanner Chaffee. Chaffee finished the game with two receptions for 48 yards on the offensive end and two tackles on defense.

Other offensive standouts were quarterback Payton Cornell who went 4/9 for 81 yards and had two rushing touchdowns, and Aaron Bautista, who had two carries for 35 yards.

On defense, the Diamondbacks had an impressive six sacks from different players, showing that they also have a defense to go with their offensive weapons.

For their second game of the season, Serrano will host Adelanto on Thursday, August 26. It will be Adelanto’s first game of the season.
