Serrano football played against Sultana High School on October 22nd, and although their starting quarterback Payton Cornell, was hurt early in the game, they fought through the adversity and found a way to win. Serrano defeated Sultana 20-6.
When Cornell went down, it was Tanner Chaffee who was able to step up and fill his shoes, although he was not the only one given a shot at the position. Chaffee ended the game going 3/4 passing for 101 yards and a touchdown.
The game plan seemed to be to keep the ball on the ground and running back Ron Elmidge took the bulk of that load. He powered through the Sultana defense averaging 5.7 yards a carry, finishing with 16 carries for 91 yards and two TD’s.
Trevor Sturdevant went 0/3 passing on the night, but as a receiver had 2 receptions for 66 yards and a TD. Sturdevant also impressed the defensive end with 6 tackles for the night.
The Diamondbacks defense had a strong showing for the night, only giving up a TD late in the fourth quarter. Defensive leaders include Sean Stinnett with 5 tackles, Ethan Pippen who had 4 tackles and assisted with 5 others, and Jacob Porter who had 3 tackles and one assist.
With this victory Serrano advances to 6-3 for the season, and 2-2 in the Mojave River League. On the 29th of November, they play their last game of the season at home against the 2-7 Hesperia High School Scorpions.
