The 40th Annual Serrano FFA Awards Banquet was a night to remember, brimming with recognition, gratitude, and a spirit of fellowship. Under the leadership of outgoing Chapter President Mia Johnson, the event showcased the dedication and achievements of its members, while looking ahead to the promising future of the chapter.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Mia Johnson, who set the tone for the night’s celebrations. “Tonight, we celebrate all of the achievements made throughout the year. The officers and I have the privilege of recognizing members for their outstanding accomplishments and special guests for their support and assistance,” said Mia, emphasizing the importance of community and teamwork in the chapter’s success.

The event continued with a heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem by Jayde Burgen, followed by an invocation led by Pastor Daouda Traore. Attendees then enjoyed a delicious dinner featuring smoked pulled pork, coleslaw, mac n cheese, and a dessert potluck, generously sponsored by the Serrano FFA Alumni and prepared by dedicated volunteers with a special thanks going out to Denesha Johnson, Mia’s Mother, who made the mac n cheese.

Recognizing the academic excellence of chapter members, students with the highest GPAs in their respective grades where honored. Notable recipients included Victoria Corona, Gabriella Garcia, Vincent Porro, Juliette Flores, Jeremy Thurber, Kaitlyn Margis, Bryce Scott, Gracey MacDonald, and Logan Canright. These students exemplify the high standards and dedication that Serrano FFA members strive for.
Parents were also acknowledged for their much appreciated support. “They have provided us with transportation, supported us with our ag projects, and helped us pay for all of our activities,” said Chapter Treasurer Juliette Flores, as she invited parents to stand and receive a well-deserved round of applause.

Proficiency Awards were presented to students who have shown exceptional skill in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). Among the honorees were Bryson Sydnes for Sheep Production, Tyler Sell for Swine Production, Presley Cariveau for Diversified Livestock, Gracey MacDonald for Beef Production, Logan Williams for Agriculture Mechanics, and Julia Harden for Poultry Production. Kaitlyn Margis, Bryson Sydnes, Marissa Valasquez, and Chloe Westerkamp recieved their State Degree, which is awarded to students who have demostrated a high level of commitment to the FFA and made significant accomplishments in their SAE Project.
The prestigious Star Greenhand award went to Rowan LaFever, while the Star Chapter Farmer was awarded to Chloe Westerkamp. Additionally, the Star in Agriculture Mechanics was also awarded to Chloe Westerkamp, reflecting her outstanding contributions and leadership within the chapter.

Honorary memberships were bestowed upon Mr. Davy Feller and Mrs. Rhiannon Westerkamp, recognizing their significant contributions to the chapter. “The support that you provide through educating our members is greatly appreciated. We wish to share our appreciation and thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Mia Johnson expressed with heartfelt gratitude.

The evening also celebrated various contest and team participants, including those who excelled in the Best Informed Greenhand contest and public speaking competitions. Serrano placed in the top 5 at the sectional finals and the officer team placed 2nd at the regional contest. The recognition of these achievements highlighted the talents and dedication of Serrano FFA members.
Students from various CTE Pathways were among the program completers who demonstrated diligence in completing four years of agricultural studies. Graduation Stoles were presented to eleven outstanding seniors as a symbol of their commitment and hard work.
The DeKalb Award, given to a senior who exemplifies scholarship, leadership, and agricultural work ethic, was awarded to Mia Johnson, whose dedication and achievements have set a high standard for her peers. The “True Blue Serrano FFA Award,” recognizing a member who has shown outstanding dedication and loyalty to the chapter, was presented to Bryson Sydnes. His commitment and hard work have made a lasting impact on the chapter and its members.
The Alumni Scholarships, recognizing students’ commitment and future potential, were awarded to Mia Johnson, Gracie MacDonald, Bryson Sydnes, Chloe Westerkamp and Julia Harden. Their dedication to their studies and their involvement in the FFA were acknowledged with these scholarships.

A special moment of the night was the installation of the 2024-2025 Chapter Officer Team. The new officers include Marissa Velasquez as Sentinel, Abi Traore as Reporter, Vincent Porro as Treasurer, Emily Synder as Secretary, Caleb Bordeaux as Vice President, and Juliette Flores as President. These individuals were chosen for their leadership qualities and commitment to continuing the legacy of excellence in the Serrano FFA chapter.
Mia Johnson, in her retiring address, reflected on her journey and the growth of the chapter. Her speech was a poignant reminder of the impact that FFA has on shaping young leaders and fostering a sense of community. The evening concluded with a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to the success of the banquet and the chapter’s ongoing achievements.
