Phelan Man Arrested For Felony Evading After Road Rage Incident In Apple Valley

Tri-Community NewsPlus

A 22-year-old male from Phelan, Derek Gregory Vannoy, was arrested early Sunday morning for felony evading after a road rage incident. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Dispatch received a report about the incident, which led Deputy Kenneth Mullins from the Apple Valley Police Department to locate Vannoy’s vehicle near Dale Evans Parkway and Thunderbird Road in Apple Valley. However, when Mullins attempted to pull Vannoy over, he ran a stop sign and continued driving his vehicle in an attempt to evade the deputy.

Deputies pursued Vannoy, who at times reached speeds of up to 80 mph and went into oncoming traffic lanes. Eventually, Deputy Dominic Ciani was able to perform a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver and safely end the pursuit. Vannoy was then arrested for felony evading and transported to High Desert Detention Center. He is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, at approximately 1:18 a.m. on Waalew Road and Central Road in Apple Valley. The exact details about the road rage incident that led to the pursuit have not been released. However, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

This serves as a reminder to all drivers to remain calm and avoid engaging in road rage incidents. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Deputy Mullins at Apple Valley Police Department at (760) 240-7400 or Sheriff’s Dispatch at (760) 956-5001.
