In the month of August, we are still enjoying summer’s warmth. Still, our beautiful Fall season will soon be upon us, providing perfect growing temperatures for finishing the summer crops with some of the most gorgeous tomatoes of the season and the opportunity to enjoy some Fall season crops you can plant this month. You can plant radishes, lettuce, spinach, and other leafy greens. Kale is a hardy green that will survive the winter season in most of the High Desert. Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts will survive the Winter in the warmer regions providing a beautiful Fall and Winter garden. Don’t forget that many early Spring flowers perform better with a Fall planting in all but the coldest areas like Wrightwood, including delphinium, larkspur, and other gorgeous Spring flowers. At Moonstruck Farms, we are preparing for the Fall season with an additional sowing of sunflowers, marigolds, and zinnias, along with crates of Fall colored oriental lilies being “rooted” in the cool room. The Gravenstein apples are coming off the trees along with the peaches, so look for apple butter and peach jam back at the market in the coming weeks. We will be starting a new set of transplants to add a whole other line of beautiful Spring flowers to our lineup next Spring. These will be planted in October along with the anemones and ranunculus for next season.
The Phelan Farmers Market is happy to announce that Gaytan Family Farm has joined the market, providing us with a full line of farm-fresh produce, juices, microgreens, jams, guacamole, and salsas, all made fresh on the farm. We are currently in the Phelan Community Park but will be moving back to the Phelan Community Center parking lot soon. The Phelan Farmers Market is every Monday from 2-6pm, except for a few holidays. The Wrightwood Farmers Market is every Friday, 4 -7 pm in the Wrightwood Community Center parking lot.
