Driver Arrested After High-Speed Chase In Stolen Vehicle Ends In Phelan

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies arrest a 53-year-old Adelanto man after a high-speed pursuit in Phelan on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Hymie Torres faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle after leading deputies on a dangerous chase through residential areas, endangering public safety.

The incident began at 12:29 p.m. when Deputy A. Elkabany attempts to stop a black Chevrolet Silverado for vehicle code violations near the intersection of Colorado Road and Palmdale Road in Phelan. Torres, the driver, faild to yield and fled, initiating a pursuit. He was driving recklessly, reaching unsafe speeds, veering into oncoming traffic lanes, and running through controlled intersections.

The chase came to an end when Torres abandoned the vehicle near Koala Road and attempted to escape on foot. With assistance from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Division, deputies located Torres hiding in the vicinity of the abandoned vehicle.

Authorities confirmed the Chevrolet Silverado was reported stolen from Adelanto earlier in May 2024. Deputies arrested Torres without further incident and book him into the High Desert Detention Center where he is currently held on $30,000 bail.
