Children participating in the Wrightwood Kids Dance Program showcased their new dance moves on the big stage at the Wrightwood Community Building on Saturday, March 9th.
Now in its second season, the Wrightwood CSD Parks & Rec has continued offering a Creative Movement dance class (children 4-8 years old) and a Kids Ballet Class (6-12 years old).
The 7-week dance program began in January, where students met for one hour every Saturday in the community building. During each class, the students learned dance skills and practiced a routine in preparation for a sensational March dance recital.
“It’s something that kids can do and is not a huge time commitment. But it allows the kids an opportunity to learn how to work with others while just having fun,” said Wrightwood resident Carrie, who enrolled her 4-year-old daughter Rilyn in the program last Fall and signed her up again this year for the Creative Movement dance class. “It’s a great program, and she loves it. She loves coming here every week!” said Carrie.

The Wrightwood Kids Dance program was first offered last year and was immediately well received by local families, who have requested that more youth programs be offered in town. In fact, after the very first dance performance in December, the community has since come together to ensure that the program continues to thrive.
The Wrightwood Property Owners Association made a great effort by holding a donation-matching fundraiser in January of 2024 and raised over $1000 to purchase leotards, tights, ballet slippers, and other necessary items for the program. The WCSD was gifted a significant check from donations made by residents in the community, along with a $500 matching fund from the WPOA. The Wrightwood Community Service District then went above and beyond by buying new dance gear and installing ballet bars along the wall of the Community Building. The space also received a new can of paint on the inside days before the big recital.

With a fresh coat of paint on the walls, newly funded gear, and tutu skirts for the class, the dance recital was a success, with a packed room full of parents, family, friends, and community supporters. Dance instructor April Gould thanked everyone for coming to the recital and was blown away by the community’s love and support. April thanked the WCSD, especially CSD General Manager Tamie Keen and Administrative Assistant Angela Rovida. She also thanked the WPOA and key members Nancy Kupka and Rita Bemis, who spearheaded the donation-matching fundraiser.
The Kids Dance Program is expected to continue in the Summer of 2024. Follow the Wrightwood Community Service District on social media through Facebook or Instagram to be the first to know when registration opens.
Wrightwood CSD is also hiring a part-time Recreation Coordinator to oversee the service district’s recreational programs, sports leagues, and events. The new Recreation Coordinator will work approximately 10-15 hours per week and will be paid an hourly rate of $20-$22, depending upon experience.
