Despite a late-season snowfall, the Wrightwood Community Services District (WCSD) hosted a successful and well-attended Earth Day celebration for local children on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The free event, held at the District’s Community Building, offered a variety of hands-on educational and craft activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness.
Children enjoyed indoor activities as snow fell outside, turning the event into an unexpected “snow day” celebration. Multiple local organizations participated, each providing unique, earth-friendly projects and learning opportunities.

Michelle Hannon from the Community Teaching Garden in Phelan gave a short lesson on planting and caring for pomegranate trees, highlighting their air-purifying benefits and the nutritional value of the fruit. “Trees help clean the air by absorbing gaseous pollutants and trapping particulate matter. They also play a role in producing oxygen through photosynthesis,” said Michelle.
Slithers and Crawl introduced children to reptiles, spiders, and insects. Booth visitors were invited to observe, touch, and learn about the creatures up close. Blossom Enrichment Center offered a flowerpot decorating activity. Children filled their painted pots with soil and flowering plants donated by Wrightwood’s Mountain Hardware.

Art and craft booths were abundant. I Dyed Face Painting provided face art for children, while Art & Nature Camp led a project where participants decorated wood slices with natural materials. Moonstruck Farms hosted a make-your-own window hanger station using pressed flower petals from their own blooms.

The Wrightwood Community Garden offered a seed planting activity, allowing kids to take home a planted seed and watch it grow. The WCSD hosted several of its own activities, including Earth Day coloring, a pinecone bird feeder craft, a handprint painting station, and a mini greenhouse hanger project for seed germination.
Wrightwood Friends of the Library provided Earth Day-themed coloring sheets and a story time session for young attendees.
To complement the festivities, The Pepper Guy offered nutritious snacks, sandwiches, and baked goods on the Community Building’s front porch, which proved popular among guests.

WCSD Activities Director Erin DeGroot Said “Even with the snow, our Earth Day event turned out to be such a great day. Local businesses and organizations showed up with amazing free crafts and activities, and families of all ages came out to enjoy it all. I’m so grateful to everyone who participated and the volunteers who helped make it happen. Events like this really show how strong and connected our community is. I look forward to more events like this in the future- they make such a positive impact and remind us how wonderful it is to come together.”
