The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 5 approved a 14.79-acre expansion of the Phelan Community Park at the northeast corner of Sahara Road and Warbler Road.
The project, recommended by the County Planning Commission, received approvals for both land use entitlement and environmental clearance. When completed, it will be the largest public park in the Phelan area.
According to the approved plans, the park will be developed in two phases. Phase I, estimated to take two to three years, will include a 36,600-square-foot multi-purpose sports field, playgrounds for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, a 26,000-square-foot pump track and skate park, dog parks, restrooms, and a bicycle trail. The site will also include 137 parking spaces and 20 electric vehicle charging stations.
Phase II, projected for completion in three to six years, will add a second multi-purpose and softball field, a 1,600-square-foot equestrian arena, equestrian vehicle parking, additional bicycle trails, and 43 more parking spaces.
Nearly 30 percent of the site will be landscaped with drought-tolerant plants. Protections will also be in place for western Joshua trees under state conservation laws, according to the County Planning Commission.
The expanded facility is expected to serve a broad range of residents, including families, athletes, skaters, equestrians and pet owners.
