The popular Summer Art and Nature Camp, organized by local nonprofit Drawing Together, is returning for its third year at Wrightwood Elementary School. The camp is open to all children in the community, including homeschooled students, and will run for two weeks in June.
This year, the program will serve children ages 4 to 12 and offer volunteer opportunities for youth ages 14 and older. Registered participants will rotate daily through three classes: drama, music and gardening. Children will be grouped by age and receive two recess breaks each day, making sure students get plenty of exercise too.
The summer program is essential for students and helps them to retain critical learning skills that may be used less during the summer vacation. “Research shows that summer learning loss can occur each year and makes the following school year harder. Our program helps mitigate those losses and makes learning fun so that students continue exploring all summer long,” said Jamie Crooke Powell, program director.
The camp will operate in coordination with the Snowline Joint Unified School District, which has allowed the camp, use of the Wrightwood Elementary School campus. Families may register for one or both weeks: June 9–12 and June 16, 17, 18 and 20 (the camp will not meet on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth). Sessions run daily from 9 a.m. to noon.
Tuition is $75 per week or $140 for both weeks. Sibling discounts are available. Registration is open at drawingtogether.city/wrightwood-programs.
While the program was funded in previous years by the California Arts Council, recent state budget cuts have reduced that support. As a result, fees have increased slightly. Thankfully, the Drawing Together organization says community donations are helping provide scholarships to ensure that all interested students can attend.
