Sheriff’s Department Urging Extreme Caution to Hikers as Mount Baldy Trailheads Reopen

Be prepared for winter terrain, including snow and ice. Traction devices and proper footwear are critical if you decide to hike in the winter.

After recent closures due to severe weather, the trails at Mount Baldy are once again open to the public. While many are eager to get back out into our local mountains, the Sheriff’s Department wants to stress that reopening does not mean conditions are safe.

Mount Baldy, which rises above 10,000 feet, is renowned for its rapidly changing weather, steep, exposed trails, snow, ice, and high winds. The risk for winter hikers remains high and very real. Since 2016, the mountain has seen 345 search and rescue missions and 23 fatalities. Many of these incidents occurred in popular spots, such as Icehouse Canyon and the Devil’s Backbone, where thin ridges and icy patches can turn a routine hike into a life-threatening situation in seconds.

Sheriff’s officials noted that while their Search and Rescue teams are among the best in the nation, the frequency of calls is becoming a major point of concern. The department has been working closely with the U.S. Forest Service and congressional representatives to address visitor safety, especially as the mountain continues to draw large crowds from outside the area.

“Our Search and Rescue members are skilled and proud to do this job,” the Sheriff’s Department stated. “But enthusiasts must do their part as well: be prepared, know the weather conditions, and know the limitations of your own skill set.”

Even well-prepared and experienced hikers can quickly find themselves in life-threatening situations. Winter hazards continue to remain very much present, and hikers looking to head out should expect snow-covered trails, icy sections, limited visibility, and potential for sudden storms.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department strongly encourages all hikers to take the following precautions:

  • Check weather forecasts and trail conditions immediately before your trip.
  • Be prepared for winter terrain, including snow and ice. Traction devices and proper footwear are critical.
  • Avoid narrow, exposed trails during icy or windy conditions.
  • Hike within your experience level and turn back if conditions worsen.
  • Carry navigation tools, extra food and water, and emergency communication devices.
  • Let someone know your hiking plans, including your route and expected return time.

Mount Baldy remains one of the most beautiful destinations in our backyard, but it is also one of the most unforgiving. As we head into the heart of the winter hiking season, the message from the Sheriff’s Department is clear: Have fun, be prepared, and, above all, please come home safe.
