On July 26 at 5 a.m., Serrano’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleading teams met in the parking lot to take pictures as the sun rose. This marked the beginning of long days ahead for the cheerleaders, who were headed to UC Santa Barbara for a four-day UCA (Universal Cheer Association) camp.
Cheer camp is considered one of the most important weeks of the season, which begins in May and continues through February. Head Coach Jennifer Johnson stresses the importance of the camp, saying, “It furthers the team’s skills for the season, teaches them new material and rule changes, and is overall a great team-building event.”

Over the first two days, the cheerleaders learned new material to prepare for two routines they would compete with on the final day. They participated in many classes that taught valuable skills, including prop and game day techniques, advanced stunting skills, private coaching, and team goal setting.

On the third day, select cheerleaders competed individually for All-American honors. If they scored high enough, they could participate in events like a parade in Hawaii for junior varsity or London for varsity. Two junior varsity girls and all seven seniors earned All-American recognition. Another UCA honor, called Pin It Forward, is awarded to athletes who exemplify leadership and sportsmanship. For this award, camp instructor is given two pins that they will provide to one athlete on the third day. On the final day, the cheerleaders will gift one of their pins to an athlete from another team. Emma Godfrey, Amarah Brambila, and Dymine Finks received this award. To end the third day, the team bonded by running into the ocean and swimming together, which was Coach Johnson’s favorite memory of the week.

The final day of camp was fast-paced and rewarding. All teams performed their routines for the staff and parents. In the small junior varsity division, Serrano took first place in both the cheer and camp routines. In the small varsity division, the team placed second in both the cheer and camp routines and won first place in overall spirit. In an interview, senior Emma Godfrey expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to make these memories with her team.
Serrano High School’s cheerleading team had a remarkable experience at UCA camp. The team not only showcased their skills and talent but also strengthened their bond. With numerous All-American awards and first-place finishes, the team’s dedication and hard work paid off. As they head into the upcoming season, the positive energy and momentum gained at camp will fuel their continued success.
