SB County Public Works Releases Video of Phelan Road Bridge Replacement

Tri-Community NewsPlus

The Phelan Road Bridge at Sheep Creek Wash has been closed for approximately four months due to the damage from tropical storm Hilary back in August of 2023.

Although many roads were closed throughout the Tri-Community due to the storm, most would reopen within a few days after the historic rainfall event, except for Phelan Road from Buckwheat to just past the Sheep Creek Wash.

Our last report for the status of Phelan Road was on September 21st, 2023, and states: “The bridge at Phelan Road was breached at the edges of the bridge, causing the water to undercut the road on at least one side of the road. Brendon Briggs, Director of Public Works, said it may take a few months to reopen Phelan Road but may be shorter once a contractor is hired to complete the project. He also said the crews are out around the community and county doing their best to clean up the roads and get back to the status quo.”

A newly released video from SBC Public Works shows the extensive repairs made to the bridge over the 4 months and explains how county leadership, public works, and partner agencies came together to complete the repair work ahead of schedule. Phelan Road was able to open just before the holidays, at the end of December 2023.
