The Winter Solstice marks the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, with the shortest day and the longest night of the year in terms of sunlight. This will occur on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
On the first day of winter, the Earth’s North Pole is tilted farthest away from the sun; thus, half of the Earth is pointed away from the sun, and the other half is pointed towards it.
On this winter solstice day, stand outside at noon and look at your shadow. It’s the longest shadow that you’ll cast all year! Do this again on the day of the summer solstice, and you’ll see almost no shadow.
”Old Man Winter” is a personification of the winter season, often depicted as an elderly man who brings the cold, snow, and storms.
