The Friends of Big Bear Valley announced that Jackie and Shadow’s eggs were breached by ravens on January 30, 2026. Friends of Big Bear Valley posted this statement: “Just before noon, Shadow left the nest, Jackie did not come in, and Shadow did not return for a few hours. We will never know why, but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully. After they left the nest, we observed that one of the eggs looked like it had broken. With a camera zoom, we confirmed this. It is possible that Jackie and Shadow sensed something was wrong with the egg. They could have also been protecting their territory as many other bald eagles have been seen in the valley recently.”
Jackie laid her first egg on January 23 and the second egg on January 26, 2026. She normally lays her eggs 3 days apart. Followers of Jackie and Shadow were anxiously awaiting a third egg to join the clutch. Also stated, “There is a possibility Jackie might lay a 2nd clutch of eggs since these were lost early on and we are still early in the season, but there is no guarantee. Jackie and Shadow will need to move on from incubating first. It generally takes a month for a female’s body to recover and be ready to lay eggs again.”
The observation of Jackie and Shadow can be followed thanks to the Friends of Big Bear Valley, owners and operators of the live Eagle cam feed. The nest tree is equipped with an infrared (IR) light so the camera can see the nest, eagles, and other visitors at night. The light is not visible to the eagles or humans. For Jackie and Shadow, the nest is in complete darkness. The live Eagle camera and sound system is solar powered and runs a live stream—available to watch 24/7.
