Caltrans is hosting a public hearing to discuss the State Route 39 Reopening Project. The last meeting for the project took place in December of 2022 and presented the public with the six options they were considering for restoring access to connect Interstate-210 in Azusa to Hwy-2 near Wrightwood. Now, there are only four project options listed on their website, which include the following:
Alternative 1: Not opening the roadway
Alternative 2: Roadway will only be used for emergency service responders and maintenance access.
Alternative 3: Restricted roadway access for transportation shuttles and bicycle paths only, with plans for public parking lots.
Alternative 4: Fully open and rehabilitate the existing roadway for public traffic.
Caltrans has completed a Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment (EIR/EA) that identifies any potential impacts that would be made for each of the four options, including their biological impacts on animal and plant species and any physical impacts on the water and air quality in the area.
Caltrans is encouraging the public to read the environmental report, which will be discussed during the public hearings in April. A copy of the 613-page report can be viewed at the Wrightwood Library at 6011 Pine St. in Wrightwood, or you can view it online here.
The Public Hearing will take place in person and online. The in-person hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th, at the Azusa Auditorium, 213 East Foothill Boulevard in Azusa. That meeting will also be available to view on live stream through the City of Azusa’s website at www.azusaca.gov/952/Watch-Meetings-Online. A virtual public hearing will also take place online on Saturday, April 20th, at 10:00 a.m. through Zoom. You can register for the virtual meeting here.
If you can not attend either meeting, public comments may also be submitted by email to SR-39DEDComments@dot.ca.gov. All public comments must be received by Saturday, May 11th, 2024.
