During an April 13, 2021 SJUSD Board of Trustees meeting, the Serrano High School Advancement Via Individual Determination program was highlighted for the success they have had in preparing students for college.
AVID is a college preparatory elective class that is offered at Serrano High School. The course helps students get organized and teaches them to take notes and reflect on them in preparation for college and beyond. Statistics show that students in the course receive higher grades and have fewer failing grades than their peers that are not. This trend begins as early as freshmen year, with statistics showing 55 percent earning A’s and just one percent receiving F’s. From the freshman not enrolled in AVID, only 35 percent receive A’s.
According to statistics, every junior and senior enrolled in AVID is college and career ready, and 85 percent of all enrolled are in honors or advanced placement.
