The Wrightwood CSD distributed free firewood to Wrightwood Seniors on Wednesday, November 22nd. The event was held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Barbara Street, across from the Wrightwood Methodist Church. Seniors could drive through the supply spot, where firefighters loaded up two bundles of wood into each vehicle.

The Valyermo Hotshots graciously volunteered for the event. A total of 20-30 firefighters from the elite wildfire crew were seen splitting wood and wrapping bundles of logs for the free giveaway. A group of Serrano High School Students also volunteered to help distribute wood and conduct traffic. Serrano volunteers were led by students Autumn Pratt and Kennedy Thorne.

This is the first time the WCSD has distributed firewood to seniors in the community. “We’re excited to be doing this because it’s the first exclusively CSD-only sponsored event,” said Angela Rovida, the Administrative Assistant for the WCSD.

The event came together due to the hard work of the WCSD in conducting donations with private entities. The WCSD was able to track down the contractors hired by Edison who have been trimming and cutting trees throughout Wrightwood. A large portion of the wood supply came from Edison’s tree maintenance, donations made by local residents, and a significant contribution made by Vicky and Steve Reinek, owners of the Mountaineer Progress. The Wrightwood Methodist Church provided their empty lot and stored the wood supply on their property until the big event.

The importance of this event was made apparent from the long lines that were formed sporadically throughout the day, and a total of 131 households were given bundles of wood. The CSD hopes to continue this endeavor in the future to prepare the more vulnerable community members for the cold winter season.
