Spice lovers were in for a treat on Saturday, Oct. 12, as the town of Wrightwood heated up at the annual Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition.

The beloved event, hosted by the Wrightwood Chamber of Commerce, brought together local home chefs showcasing their best chili and salsa recipes. With flavors ranging from savory to downright fiery, this year’s cook-off had something for everyone.

As competitors stirred up their secret ingredients, the aroma of simmering chili filled the air, inviting residents and visitors to taste several chili varieties. Unfortunately, there could only be one winner, and this year’s first-place chili prize went to Tim Bickham. Second place went to Sid Averill, and third place was awarded to Christopher McNicholl. The crowd also got to participate by voting for the People’s Choice award, which this year went to Robert Gonzales.

The battle for the best salsa was also a close race, and first place was awarded to Jillian Edwards. Bruce LeClaire placed second, and third place went to Lauren Flinn.

Besides chili and salsa, drinks were available for purchase from Wrightwood Brew Co., and live music was performed by the band Monika, which included musicians Dave Cimino, Greg Jones, Eric Rodrigues and Erwin Williams.

The 2024 Chili Cook-Off and Salsa Competition was a huge success, and the Wrightwood Chamber is now looking forward to this year’s Wrightwood Mountain Holiday Celebration, happening at the end of November!
