Local Phelan business, Sweet Salt Boba has an upcoming Basketball tournament for all middle schoolers and high schoolers. The Basketball tournament will be hosted on Saturday, August 8th at the Phelan Community Park from 4 pm to 7 pm.
The tournament will be divided into two competitions, one for each age group. The first age group includes 6th to 8th graders, and a second age group for 9th-12th graders. The tournament will include a 3-point shootout and a 1-on-1 challenge. Be sure to secure your spot, as there will only be up to 15 participants for each tournament in each age group. If you want to sign up for both tournaments in a single age group, you can. The first two Tournaments will be for the first age group (6th to 8th graders) and will begin at 4 pm and will end at 5 pm. The third and fourth tournaments will be for the second age group (9th-12th graders) and will begin at 5:30 pm and will end at 7 pm.
All who compete in the tournament will receive a Sweet Salt Boba keychain just for participating! The winner of each age group tournament will receive a $20 Sweet Salt Boba gift certificate! Registration is free, but a waiver signature is required and must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Jim is the proud owner of Sweet Salt Boba, he first opened the business in 2023 and for Jim this isn’t about a tournament “its about bringing the community together!” He says “that’s why we have no registration fee, because we want the community to come together and have a good time.” Jim also explained that you don’t need any experience in basketball, “I mean if your a beginner I don’t really mind… all that matters is that you can come out and have fun.”
What led Jim to host this community event was his previous experience as a basketball coach. Jim was an Assistant Basketball coach at Serrano High school for three years, before becoming a personal trainer for a few individuals at the Phelan park. That is where he got the idea to host a basketball tournament. The individuals he trained personally sparked the idea to host a tournament for the community. Although it took him a years worth of thought, he has put together the rules, the event date, and the types of tournaments there will be.
Jim says, “depending on the out come of this basketball tournament I might try to host one not just for the high school and middle schoolers, but for the adults too.” He also says “If the event gets popular enough, I might try to host another tournament right before school starts so the kids can have fun right before they go.”
Jim emphasized to all those who want to join or may want to join in a future event to “come out and have fun…that’s all that matters, its not about the skill or how good you are, it’s about having the community together and having fun.”
