The Phelan Pinon Hills Community Services District will be hosting their first ever Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 18, 2020.
The tree, which is a Deodar Cedar has been delivered and eventually reach a height of 40-50 feet and about 30 feet wide. It will be sure to prove a fitting tree to continue this new holiday tradition for many years to come.
Currently the tree is sitting in the large wooden container it was delivered in. Because of timing the CSD has elected not to plant the tree just yet but rather wait for optimal spring conditions to plant the tree to ensure the pine will survive the transplanting process.
Since the Pine will remain in its temporary container for the ceremony, this provides an additional opportunity for community involvement by way of the need to decorate the wooden container. This job has fallen upon the Serrano Writers Club. Two volunteers have stepped up paint the planter box to look like a Christmas gift. Mackayla Schexnyder and Erin Ward spent an afternoon turning the Christmas tree into a piece of performance art that is sure to bring holiday cheer to all.
The public is invited to attend, grab a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie and enjoy the show. The tree lighting will take place at the Phelan Community Park. The district is asking that everybody wear a mask and practice social distancing.
The PPHCSD Parks and Recreation Department is excited to bring this event to the Tri-Community as part of their ongoing efforts to provide activities for kids, teens and adults. Currently the district is working on a $23 million park expansion project that will add several major elements to the Phelan Community Park including a new community building/gym, playgrounds and sports fields.
