On May 13, 2020 a local Phelan girl Savannah Nelson was treated to a Drive-by Birthday party by the community. This was her first birthday in nearly ten years that was not spent at the hospital or at doctor’s appointment.
Savannah was born with severe scoliosis and was diagnosed with yolk sac cancer by the age of two. Because of social distancing, a regular birthday party was out of the question. So instead, her parents decided to give her a Drive-by Birthday party.
Michelle Nelson is Savannah’s mother, and she says her daughter was blown away by how many people she didn’t even know came out to wish her a happy birthday. The event started at 4pm. But by 7pm, vehicles were still passing by honking their horns and dropping off gifts. Even days later, they have been receiving cards and gifts in the mail. Michelle said, “She was so excited that so many people cared and came out to say happy birthday.”
For Michelle, this event has shown her just how close the local community is, and she wants to thank everyone for making her daughter’s day so special.
