Extraordinary Educators: A Fresh Chapter for Excelsior Charter School in Phelan

With a variety of schooling options available that may differ from traditional, every student’s educational journey has the possibility to look a little bit different. For more than 30 years, Excelsior Charter Schools has served as a cornerstone of flexibility across the High Desert, helping families chart academic paths that fit their unique lives. Now, that commitment is taking a major step forward right here in our own backyard. Excelsior’s Phelan campus has officially moved into a refreshed, upgraded facility at 4022 Phelan Road. While the brand-new address gives the school a modern footprint, its roots remain deeply embedded in the Tri-Community.

Marketing manager Linda Vargas shared the vision behind the move and reflected on what this new milestone means for local students in 7th through 12th grade. “The move was an opportunity to establish a space that better reflects where we are today and where we want to go in the future,” Vargas explains. “One of the things we love about the new location is that we were able to remain right here in the community we already serve. In fact, the move kept us in the same general area while providing a refreshed environment for our students, staff, and families.”

Unlike a traditional comprehensive high school where bell schedules dictate strict hourly movements, Excelsior’s Phelan branch centers primarily on a tailored independent study model with on-campus support. Designing a physical space to match that dynamic required a thoughtful, purpose-built layout. “Because we serve independent study students, our needs are different from those of a traditional campus with students moving through six classroom periods every day,” shared Vargas. “We need spaces that support individual meetings, academic assistance, student work, collaboration, family meetings, and school activities. The new location gives us the opportunity to create an environment that is comfortable, welcoming, and adaptable to those different needs.”

That welcoming atmosphere is essential for students who are searching for a learning environment outside the mold of traditional public education. Local families seek out Excelsior for a wide variety of reasons—whether balancing outside commitments like high-level athletics, work schedules, family responsibilities, health needs, or simply seeking an environment where they can thrive at their own pace. “Flexibility can make a tremendous difference for a student who has struggled in a traditional environment,” Vargas continued,“Our model gives students greater ownership of their schedules while still providing structure, accountability, and access to educators. Instead of expecting every student to fit into one educational model, we can work with students and families to develop a path that takes into consideration how the student learns, their goals, and what may be happening in their life outside of school. Sometimes a different environment is exactly what a student needs to rediscover confidence in themselves as a learner.”

Despite the emphasis on independent coursework, building a vibrant, connected culture remains a core priority for the staff and student leadership. “Connection is extremely important in an independent study environment. Flexibility should never mean isolation,” emphasizes Vargas. “Our students are Excelsior students regardless of how much of their education takes place independently. We want them to feel that they belong to a school community and have opportunities to create friendships, participate, develop leadership skills, and make memories.” Throughout the year, local students participate in field trips, campus events, Associated Student Body (ASB) leadership projects, and virtual learning connections. For families seeking full on-campus schedules, Excelsior’s North Victorville campus offers daily in-person instruction, complete with free school bus transportation picking up right at the Phelan site.

Looking toward the future, Excelsior aims to expand its dual-enrollment college offerings and career-technical pathways, ensuring students leave high school ready for whatever comes next, be it a four-year university, a trade certification, military service, or direct entry into the workforce.

Having recently marked the official unveiling of the facility with their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting, the team at Excelsior is eager to keep those doors wide open to neighbors across the high desert. “Finding the right school isn’t about finding one model that works for everyone. It is about finding the environment where your student can be successful,” says Vargas, “Whether they are interested in college, a career, the military, a skilled trade, or are still figuring it out, our job is to help them explore those possibilities and build a plan for their future. We invite Tri-Community families to visit us at our new location and meet our team.”
