On May 31, the 13th annual Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Wrightwood Memorial. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of people, including California’s 8th district, Congressman Jay Obernolte.
The ceremony began at 11:00 am with the invocation by Pastor Dave, followed by the Boy Scout’s color guard advancing of the colors. After the pledge of allegiance, Claudia Campbell led the gathered in singing the national anthem, after which the boy scouts retired the colors.
The men’s choral group performed the Songs of the Service, led by Lora Steinmann. During their rendition, service members seated in the audience stood to be acknowledged and joined in the singing while their branches song was sung.
Congressman Jay Obernolte attended the event as the featured speaker and gave a speech about the origins of Memorial Day. Afterward, the boy scouts raised the colors as Congressman Obernolte, and the girl scouts presented the wreath. Serrano High Schools Music Director Matt Fell, a last-minute addition to the ceremony, then played Taps as the veterans in attendance saluted.
Pastor Dave gave the benediction, and in closing Lora Steinmann and the Men’s Chorus performed “This Is My Country” and “God Bless America.”
